Calendars no longer just wall decor

Who says there's nothing to do in Stockton? Just check out the Stockton Community Calendar and see for yourself. There's plenty to do in the Stockton area and ample opportunity for every group in town to publicize their events online.

Historically, the Stockton Community Calendar was published annually in paperback by the Stockton-San Joaquin Convention and Visitors Bureau as a compilation of dates and times submitted by community groups. But it was practically obsolete as it left the presses in December and wasn't reprinted or edited during the year to reflect changes or updates.

For the past three years, this same calendar has been published on the World Wide Web by SSJCVB, in conjunction with StocktoNet, and is updated almost daily thanks to the fluid nature of the Web.

What's extra-special about this year's Community Calendar is the "on the fly" ability to add your event to the master calendar listing. Additionally, you can easily request additional information about an event, access a related Web page or forward event information via e-mail to a friend or interested party.

During my many years as a volunteer for nonprofit organizations, I've found it very frustrating to toil diligently on a fund-raising event, only to discover too late that a competing event was planned for the same day and time. The pool of nonprofit dollars is only so large in this area, and the best guarantee for a maximum event turnout is to minimize the number of possible event conflicts.

Now it's a snap to go online and check the Community Calendar for event-date availability. In addition, you can immediately add your event to the Community Calendar without waiting for approval or confirmation. Point, click, fill-in-the-blanks, and your event is added instantly to the Community Calendar listings. Any changes or additions to current events can be processed quickly via e-mail to the webmaster.

The "Tell A Friend" feature enables you to send the event information as e-mail to the recipient of your choice. The "Request More Information" option generates an e-mail message to the event contact person, allowing you to seek more specific details. If there is a Web site associated with a particular event, there is a link on the calendar as well.

You can access the calendar from StocktoNet's home page at www.stocktonet.com or from the Stockton-San Joaquin Convention and Visitors Bureau page at www.ssjcvb.org/calendar/ Including your school, church, athletic, art, educational or other event to the Stockton Community Calendar has never been easier.

In its 14th year, there's one community event that everyone surely has on their calendar by now, the Stockton Asparagus Festival. This Web site, www.asparagusfest.com has undergone a terrific facelift thanks to the generous spear-it and webmastering of festival sponsor InReach Internet.

From this site, it will be convenient to locate event times, entertainment venues, food areas and general information as well as access forms for the Fun Run and Car Show.

Never let it be said that there's "nothing to do in Stockton". The Community Calendar provides a fluid, interactive, one-stop chronicle of all the events in our area. Visit the calendar site today to be sure your event is included in the happenings.
